Cook conquers Late Models, authors another winning chapter at Ace

By Adam Smith of The Times News

ALTAMAHAW — The winning touches complete, Rodney Cook whipped around and set his car on cruise control, touring the track in what became a backward victory lap.

Attach another chapter to his storybook season at Ace Speedway.

The Reidsville driver conquered an eventful 75-lap Late Models feature Friday night, securing his eighth victory in the face of steamy conditions and sweltering situations.

“It just adds on to my dream season,” he said as his loyal throng of fans rejoiced. “It feels good to have a following behind me like this. That’s good, hard racing.”

Cook has won all except three of this season’s races in Ace’s premier classification. This time around, he recovered during the final stages to emerge on top of a competitive 16-car field.

Cook operated with the lead for 32 laps until relinquishing first position when Dustin Rumley’s No. 88 Chevrolet came alive on a restart and scampered to the front during a strong 15-lap run.

But then, on the sixth of seven action-packed restarts, here came Cook, refusing to fade quietly into the wake of Rumley’s surge.
