Rumley never flinches, repels Cook in shootout ending at Ace
By Adam Smith of The Times-News
ALTAMAHAW — Less than two laps shy of rolling in with a well-earned win, a sudden caution flag meant that a menacing shootout-style ending now was staring down Dustin Rumley.
He never blinked.
The McLeansville young gun capped an unwavering performance by coolly handling the fiery pressure of a green-white-checkered conclusion and emerged victorious in the 75-lap Late Models feature Friday night at Ace Speedway.
Rumley led every lap and withstood the double-file fury of six caution periods and subsequent restarts to secure his second victory of the season in the track’s premier racing classification.
“It really just got better as I went,” he said of his No. 88 Chevrolet. “Them restarts just killed me. It pushed real bad on the restarts. Shoot, if I could’ve just settled in and hit some marks I believe it would’ve gotten better every lap.”
Roughed up and knocked out of the lead position in recent weeks, the 20-year-old Rumley stood tall during the most critical stages to repel his nemesis, Rodney Cook.
Reidsville’s Cook, who has ruled Victory Lane here, quickly rose from the rear of the 14-car field and challenged Rumley on the outside. He chose the cone and jumped to the high side during a pair of early restarts.
