Two races in one: Cook hustles to retrieve backup car then wins again at Ace

By Adam Smith of The Times-News

ALTAMAHAW — By the time Rodney Cook climbed out in Victory Lane to the roaring embrace of his pumped-up fan base, he had won two races Friday night.

The first was a road trip waged against the clock, which went successfully and allowed him to return from his race shop in time to compete with a backup car in Ace Speedway’s main event.

Then came the payoff for that rush job as the Reidsville driver unleashed a comprehensive show of strength and seized victory in the track’s 100-lap Late Models feature.

Ultimately, Cook’s No. 14 Chevrolet charged from the rear, led the final 94 laps and stood up to every test while all sorts of situations popped off throughout the running order.

That car was pressed into duty amid a fit of necessity earlier in the night, when Cook’s primary No. 14 Ford suffered a broken water pump during pre-race practice sessions.

“I said if we pull this one off that just tells you what kind of luck we’ve got,” Cook said, recounting a conversation from the round trip of roughly 30 miles to retrieve the backup car. “I don’t play the lottery. I need to go buy a lottery ticket or something.”
