Tempers flare as Cook outslugs Rumley for intense win at Ace
By Adam Smith of The Times-News
ALTAMAHAW — Hard-core competition boiled over into full-scale combat.
Incensed men threatened to turn the angry post-race scene into a riot.
And when the dust finally settled, a Friday night churning with intensity had become an instant classic at Ace Speedway.
Rodney Cook chased down Dustin Rumley and unleashed bare-knuckles tactics to complete a somewhat remarkable rally that produced victory in the track’s 75-lap Late Models feature.
Then came the checkered flag and explosive aftermath that prompted the fans to pour out of the grandstands and press against the tall fence that lines the frontstretch.
Rumley, who had seemed poised to deliver a second winning performance in as many weeks, caught up to Cook on the backstretch and spun him out under post-race caution conditions, just as the celebration of Cook’s sixth victory this season was beginning.
So Cook brought his No. 14 Ford to Ace’s start / finish line — where the top three finishers always gather for their podium obligations — and shoved it nose-to-nose with Rumley’s No. 88 Chevrolet.
