ALTAMAHAW — Rodney Cook was in the spotlight Friday night at Ace Speedway, capturing his fifth checkered flag of the season in the 75-lap Late Models feature.

Cook squeaked past points leader Speedy Faucette, overtaking Faucette on the eighth lap and leading throughout the duration of Ace’s premier racing division.

On lap 74, a caution went out and Cook and Faucette were faced with a green-white-checkered flag when they came back around the front stretch.

Cook bolted out to a car-length lead on the restart and Faucette attempted to pass him coming out of turn four, but couldn’t manage to get by him.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Cook said. “We put on a show for these fans. I thought I had a great car early on and it got tight as the race went on. All the ups and down me and Speedy have had, I appreciate him racing me clean.”

Faucette and Cook got into each other on several different occasions coming out of the corners, but both drivers never really lost control of their cars.

“He’s got the most obnoxious fans in the world,” Faucette said of Cook’s followers. “But no matter how bad Rodney’s treated me or wrecked me, the cat can drive a racecar. That’s the bottom line. I have never taken that away from him and I never will.”

The victory had a little more meaning for Cook as he celebrated in front of the grandstand during the post-race ceremonies with car owner Bill Ingold.

“For me to get a victory on Bill Ingold’s 82nd birthday, that means the world to me,” Cook said.
