Retired Beggarly can’t shake love of racing, roars again at Ace
By Adam Smith of The Times-News
ALTAMAHAW — Barry Beggarly was fielding questions and piecing together typically humble responses about his return to Ace Speedway from an extended absence when, tellingly, up popped an inquiry of his own.
“What does a retired race car driver do?” he asked the reporter standing in front of him.
For Beggarly, now a 60-year-old grandfather, that answer does not reside in the comfort of a recliner or the serenity of a golf course.
The former national champion, whose name wakes up the echoes of a golden period in this region’s grassroots racing scene, prefers the familiar rhythm of stock cars.
The tinkering and tuning in the shop, the roaring intensity of the competition at the track, evidently is woven into his very fiber.
“It’s kind of hard to get out of your blood,” he said. “I really don’t know why I’m back, other than I just enjoy it. I guess it’s just like how old fishermen never die.”
Pelham’s Beggarly delivered a turn-back-the-clock performance on Ace’s most recent racing night by placing second in the main event, a 100-lap featured race for the Late Models.
