Ace notes: Support class sees growth at race track
By Adam Smith of The Times-News
ALTAMAHAW — General manager Brad Allen was walking down pit road during last week’s pre-racing hours at Ace Speedway when he happened upon a somewhat odd discovery.
There, parked in tight clusters with the Late Models, were stalls packed with Limited Sportsman cars.
“Then I realized,” he said, “the whole frontstretch was full.”
Somebody soon approached and asked where such a flood of drivers and their teams had come from.
“I don’t know,” Allen replied, “but I’m glad they’re here.”
An influx of eight cars boosted Ace’s field of Limited Sportsman entries to 17 cars, an eye-popping total that nearly doubled the division’s previous high for this season.
The new arrivals helped pump plenty of clashes, pileups and engaging moments into last week’s final event of the night, a 30-lap slugfest.
